Crack Pork

Once upon a time, I used to be an eager beaver
when it came to hunting for new eateries.

Today, there are just SO MANY new places
and my purse can't keep up with the dining scene -_-

I'm glad that I spent when I could back then
and to a certain extent, I am glad that I used to splurge
on the "finer" things in life for the moment and for the experience.

Perhaps, it was a phase back then for me -
the spending phase
and now, it's all about saving saving saving ….
(when it always should have been the other way round - save then spend).

During one of the weekends, we had a pork fest -
my sis suggested to try out Crack Pork in Kota Damansara.

These days, I rely on my sis for restaurant recommendations
because every other week she seems to be going somewhere new.
The perks of having no financial obligations.

Once upon a time, I knew how that felt like.

We ordered almost everything on the menu
and my personal favourite item was the porchetta sandwich - YUM!

Even the dessert has PORK (bacon) in it ^^

Mother's Day - This year

This year, we had brunch for lunch because my dad attended a meeting in the morning.
11 a.m. brunch became 1 p.m. lunch.

All credit goes to my sister for preparing the food.
I just helped out with the plating and paying (for groceries).

Looking at this pic makes me realise how much I miss using a camera.

When you thought that your iPhone camera was good enough . . . . .
a digital camera still wins hands down.

Smoked salmon and juicy bacon with guacamole on corn and zucchini fritters with tomato salsa and mushrooms on the side.

I went to Touche Cafe early in the morning to grab 'em pastries.

My mum LOVES the nut pastry and is always asking to go there so we thought that it would be a good idea to buy it for her as dessert for Mother's Day.

Pan fried fish for the grandmother because she doesn't eat alotta things.

New addition to the family this Mother's Day.

Mother's Day - A year ago

Realized that I did not document last year's Mother's Day brunch.

Looking at these pics, it sure felt like yesterday when we prepared this spread.
Gotta love home cooked/prepared meals :)

Bridge No. 7

I was SO determined to eat here after reading about this place on food blogs.
It was pretty near the hotel we stayed at - Four Points by Sheraton.
The pork and century dumplings are a must try! So yummeh.

My uncle told me that I can actually purchase the frozen dumplings from them and bring it back to KL.
Maybe next time :P

I know I cannot stop raving about this prawn noodles but it was a bowl of heaven.

The lady recommended to add the deep fried pork in my noodles. Yummeh.
The prawns were pretty decent in size - not like the puny sized ones in PJ/KL's prawn noodles.
Their fish cake is also very tasty.

Mike ordered the beef noodles  -_-

Sandakan beef? He said that my prawn noodles was better. OF COZ la.
Sandakan is associated with seafood and not beef.

What we did in Sandakan.

Looked to Trip Advisor for "things to do" in Sandakan.
Was actually keen on taking a boat to Turtle Island but
Mike being Mike, was worried about pirates -_-

So, it was a no no.

I googled for tours and decided on going to the Gomantang Caves to check out the birds nests and Kinabatangan river cruise. It was a full day tour with a lot of time wasted in between.

After going to the caves, we adjourned for lunch and had to wait 3 hours for the river cruise because the animals would only come out later in the day.

During the 3-hour wait, we had to listen to our tour guide's delusion of grandeur tales. Something about him being the 7th generation in his family and his great x7 grandfather was of China royalty descent that ran away to KL and to Sandakan after that because he murdered somebody in China.

HMMMMM. Erm okay.

Anyway, pictures :

The cave is SUPER smelly - smells of bird shit but it should have been expected because it's filled with birds.

There are also TONS of roaches. URGH. Lucky none crawled up Mike's pants since he wore short pants. LOL.

Workers climbing on a really high ladder to collect birds nest.

It was a pretty sad sight to see a lot of broken egg shells on the ground and sometimes, there would be baby birds too. I just hope that it wasn't because of the birds nest collection.

Kinabatangan river cruise - before the cruise, I was actually worried and was thinking of WHAT IF a crocodile came and overturned the small boat we were on?

I asked the guide about safety and he said I'll be fine, as long as I don't put my hands out of the boat. WTH.

The biggest crocodile in this river is said to be as big as our boat.

While we waited for 3 hours . . . .

It rained halfway while we were on the boat and we were soaking wet throughout the cruise.

I was looking forward to seeing the Pygmy elephants but apparently, they went deeper into the jungle that week. Animal sighting is purely dependant on luck.

Our tour guide treated us like little kids . . .

"So how many animals did we see today? Hornbill. Crocodile. Proboscis monkey. Macaques."

Talking about Macaques . . . I usually see them at Bukit Kiara hill and avoid them like the plague. But here I was in Sandakan, made to look at them for a good 15 minutes while we were on the boat because the Japanese tourist with us seemed so fascinated to watch them.

Perhaps, I have been taking the Macaques for granted. LOL.

We were rushing to get back to our van because the second storm was coming.
We were already drenched one round and wasn't looking forward to the second round.

Just right when we got inside the van, it started pouring like MAD.
Mike got a fever after the tour.

The day after, we went for a 'half day' tour to the Orang Utan sanctuary.

If you're not careful, it might be raining pee on you in the sanctuary.

Feeding time.

I need a new camera ! *HINT HINT*

It's May already?

April totally whizzed by with 3 weddings during the weekends.
So happy for our friends who have found the love of their lives.

2015 is a year filled with weddings to attend :)

Initially, April was going at tortoise pace for me.
But now that it's already May, looking back, April just flew by as well.

Can't wait until June arrives ;)

I love this year because of the many long weekends.

I have planned a trip in August for one of the long weekends
and I'm looking to plan another trip in October ! Woo hoo.

I am on a kiasu travelling mode because I told myself that I NEED to really enjoy the very precious moments that I have before there is a bun in the oven as advised by many of those who already have a baby.

Travel while you can, they say. I say, YES YES YES! Mike says he doesn't have enough leave. SAD.

Anyways, during the long lovely weekend in May, I was desperate to find something to look forward to so that April would pass faster for me . . . so I booked a pretty last minute trip to . . .  SANDAKAN!

Most people would show me weird looks when I told them about the destination I chose and they would say the following :

1. Why not KK?
2. Is it safe?
3. Better not go out at night.

I picked Sandakan only because of the price of tickets.

I checked almost every destination on Air Asia and Sandakan was the "cheapest", which wasn't exactly cheap either because the fares were hiked up during that weekend . . . but I just had to go somewhere.

And oh, before I chose Sandakan, I told Mike that I wanted to surprise him with a surprise destination…but I forgot that I was using his Air Asia ID and notification went to his email immediately after booking. Super fail.

Anyhow, just for the record, Sandakan isn't as dangerous or scary as people make it sound. . . .
AND Sandakan's seafood is so fresh and good. I'm already missing it!

[EDIT : 15 May 2015 : Looks like Sandakan is dangerous !!!! Just read the news that 2 people were kidnapped at Ocean King ! I'm just glad to be back home.]

Our cholesterol levels must have shot through the roof that weekend. We are on a 'detox' mode now but it totally failed because we had mutton briyani rice the day after we came back -_-"

Ocean King Seafood Restaurant, Sandakan.

Salted egg sotong

Prawn egg noodles. The prawns were so big and so fresh!

Steamed fish

Lobster fried with egg, spring onions and ginger. The lobster was succulent.

Seafood noodles - didn't expect much of it when I was it but when I ate it, I could taste the wok hei. It was very tasty.

Clam soup

Salad prawns

Just so you know, we went to Ocean King twice during our trip.

We actually wanted to go there for our last meal before heading back to KL
but it was closed :(
